Six Urban Centers Designated as UNESCO Creative Cities
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network welcomed 55 new member cities from various countries on the occasion of World Cities Day, November 2, 2023.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network consists of municipalities that integrate culture and creativity into their growth policies, exemplifying forward-thinking in urban design centered on inhabitants.
Six Indian cities are included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
Gwalior
Gwalior, a picturesque city in Madhya Pradesh, has earned a spot on the list for its cultural musical contributions, especially the esteemed Gwalior Gharana, a tradition of classical music held in high regard across India.
Kozhikode
UNESCO has acknowledged Kozhikode in Kerala for its literary significance, with the city home to over 500 libraries and in excess of 50 publishing houses.
Varanasi
UNESCO has acknowledged Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh as a member of its creative cities network, specifically in the area of music, celebrating the city's commitment to perpetuating the Guru-Shishya tradition through institutions like the Sangeet Sankul Music School.
Srinagar
Srinagar in Jammu stands out for its exceptional craftwork and traditional arts, with artisans there crafting unique hand-made products.
Jaipur
Renowned for its cultural tapestry, Jaipur in Rajasthan is a hub for the region’s traditional crafts and folk arts, with an emphasis on its vivid paintings, detailed carvings, and expertly crafted jewelry.
Chennai
