A new champion, Pepper X, claims the throne as the world's hottest chili pepper.
Pepper X boasts a staggering 2.69 million Scoville heat units, surpassing the Carolina Reaper by over a million units. Established in 1912 by Wilbur Scoville, it measures the concentration of capsaicin in peppers.
Ed Currie, a celebrated pepper breeder, is behind the breeding of both the Carolina Reaper and Pepper X.
Pepper X is result of crossbreed between the Carolina Reaper and a super-hot chili from Michigan. Unlike the spicy-sweet Carolina Reaper, Pepper X offers an earthy flavor in its greenish-yellow appearance.
Currie's personal tasting of Pepper X resulted in excruciating cramps and over three hours of fiery aftermath. Currie introduced Pepper X to the world in his famous Youtube show "Hot Ones".
Pepper X is available solely as a commercial hot sauce. Currie safeguards the pepper's seeds and pods under intellectual property rights, wary of imitation or theft.
