Several of the victims are still trapped under the damaged carriages, with rescue operations in full swing to bring them out and provide urgent medical attention.
Fire services, promptly reaching the scene, initiated the rescue missions. Their swift response, coupled with local police officials, have been striving to manage the crisis and pull out as many survivors and victims as possible. Sirajul Islam, a local police officer, conveyed through Reuters that the death count might potentially rise given the gravity of the situation.
Mosharraf Hossain from Bhairab Fire Station reported to The Associated Press that the initial rescue attempts had managed to recover the bodies of at least 12 individuals. Both local residents and rescue teams have been working hand in hand, showcasing immense unity and resilience during this tragic time.
