In a twist of fate that has caught the attention of the nation, Sub-inspector Somnath Zende from Pimpri Chinchwad police, who recently bagged a staggering ₹1.5 crore playing on a fantasy cricket platform during the ICC Men’s World Cup, has been suspended from active duty. The suspension follows a preliminary inquiry ordered against him, probing the legality of his participation in online gaming and subsequent interaction with the media.

Zende’s sudden fame didn’t just come from his massive win but was also magnified after he gave an interview in his police uniform, a move that has stirred controversy. According to officials, this dual act – participating in online gaming and addressing the media without prior authorization – is seen as a breach of the code of conduct set for police personnel.

Fantasy cricket platforms, for those unfamiliar, are digital arenas where enthusiasts craft virtual teams comprising of real cricketers. The participants then accumulate points or money grounded on the genuine performance of these players in live matches.

The spotlight first shone on Zende when the news of his significant win was featured in various media sections. At the time, he was part of the Riot Control team of the Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate.

Taking cognizance of the situation, Pimpri Chinchwad police Commissioner, Vinoy Kumar Choubey, authorized a preliminary investigation on October 11. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Swapna Gore, was entrusted with the inquiry.

The initial findings have resulted in Zende’s suspension, with another departmental investigation slated to take place, to be led by a different officer of the DCP rank. The outcome of this inquiry and its implications for Zende remain to be seen, but the episode surely prompts a debate on the boundaries of personal liberties and professional conduct.
