In an unprecedented event, Bobi, recognized as the world’s oldest dog by the Guinness World Records(GWR), peacefully passed away at the age of 31 years and 165 days on Monday. His heart-wrenching departure at the animal hospital was first announced by Dr. Karen Becker, the veterinarian who mentioned, “His 11,478 days on earth would never be enough for those who loved him”.

Born in the serene surroundings of Conqueiros, a quaint Portuguese village situated north of the capital Lisbon, Bobi’s journey to fame was nothing less than extraordinary often little wondering around the cats. Unlike most dogs, he was blessed with a life of freedom, often seen roaming leash-free. His life of liberty, coupled with a diet of human food sans seasonings, is believed to be the secret behind his extended lifespan, his owner Leonel Costa said.

Belonging to the Rafeiro do Alentejo breed, which typically boasts a lifespan of 12-14 years, according to the Amrican Kennel Club, Bobi outlived this expectancy by a staggering margin. This feat made him surpass the previously held record by an Australian cattle dog, Bluey, born in 1910, who lived for 29 years and five months.

But Bobi’s story was on the brink of a tragic twist. Bobi lived more than twice as long as that life expectancy. Born in a litter of four, Costa’s family, already with a house full of pets, decided not to keep the puppies. The children believed all puppies were taken away, only to discover Bobi miraculously hidden amidst logs a few days later. This fortunate turn of events ensured Bobi’s survival, setting him on a path of historical significance.

His 31st birthday bash was nothing short of spectacular, witnessing the attendance of over 100 enthusiasts, complete with a special performance by a dance troupe. While age took a toll on his eyesight and mobility, Bobi continued to cherish moments in the backyard along with the cats, rested more and napped by the fire.

For the Costa family, Bobi was not just a pet. He embodied memories of generations passed. “He stands as a symbol, a living memory of family members like my father, my brother, etc. we’ve lost over the years,” shared a nostalgic Leonel Costa. In Bobi, the world didn’t just lose a dog; it lost a legend.
