In a move anticipated due to a patent-related ban, Apple ceases sale of Latest Watches Series 9 and Ultra 2 in the United States. The ban, scheduled to take effect on December 25, stems from a patent dispute, hindering the company’s ability to import the latest models.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) imposed the ban, asserting that Apple infringed on health-technology patents held by Masimo Corp, particularly related to blood oxygen sensing in its latest Apple Watch models. Consequently, consumers will no longer find the newest Apple Watch editions available for purchase on the company’s online platform. However, in-store sales are set to continue until December 24 at approximately 270 retail outlets across the nation.

The prohibition on importing the latest models poses significant challenges for consumers looking to buy these particular Apple Watches. Meanwhile, Apple Watch SE models without the blood oxygen measuring feature remain available for purchase.

In addition to halting sales, Apple disclosed that it would not conduct out-of-warranty repairs for affected models, including Series 6 and newer editions. This move leaves consumers with limited options for hardware-related issues, as the company won’t replace these units but may offer software-related assistance, such as operating system reinstalls.

The Cupertino-based tech giant faces restrictions on replacing or exchanging watches purchased before the ban’s enforcement. While warranty-covered watches remain unaffected, post-December 25 purchases could encounter limitations on returns, exchanges, or replacements.

Furthermore, Apple employees have been instructed not to inform customers about the availability of the Apple Watch at third-party retailers due to the legal order. The company seeks to comply with the ITC order until a resolution is reached, which may involve securing a licensing agreement, federal intervention, or addressing the issue through software updates.

The halt in sales and repair services for the latest Apple Watch models marks a pivotal moment for Apple as it navigates this patent-related setback, leaving customers with restricted options in the midst of ongoing legal proceedings.
