In a significant move towards sustainable public transport, the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT) has recently bolstered its fleet with the addition of nine electric buses. These buses, supplied by Causis E Mobility Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the London-based CAUSIS Group, represent the first phase of a larger contract that involves a total of 207 electric buses.
This eco-friendly transition is not just a leap forward for KDMT but also a boon for commuters in Kalyan, Dombivli, and the surrounding areas of Bhiwandi. The introduction of these buses aligns with the increasing global emphasis on reducing carbon emissions and fostering environmentally conscious travel options.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The contract with Causis E-mobility details the procurement of 77 buses measuring 12 meters in length, alongside 130 buses that are 9 meters long. According to KDMT officials, the arrangement with Causis E-mobility includes a wet lease model. This model is particularly advantageous as it entails the operator managing the drivers, as well as the fuel and maintenance costs.
Deepak Sawant, the General Manager of KDMT Undertaking, elaborated on the financial dynamics of the partnership. “The agreement spans 12 years, within which we will pay ₹56 per kilometer for 12-meter buses and ₹50 for nine-meter buses. Additionally, a subsidy of ₹45 lakh per bus will be provided once every six years,” he explained.
Infrastructure for the Future
In preparation for these new additions, KDMT has been proactive in setting up the necessary infrastructure. A charging station for the nine buses is slated to be operational this week in the Khambalpada area of Dombivli. The station will feature around 45 charging units, ensuring that the buses, which require approximately 50 minutes to charge, are always ready for service. Remarkably, these electric buses boast an impressive range, capable of covering an estimated 180 kilometers on a single charge.
A Commitment to Sustainable Transit
Currently, KDMT operates around 75 buses on a daily basis, serving approximately 70,000 passengers. The integration of electric buses into its fleet is a testament to KDMT’s commitment to sustainable urban transit solutions. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner, greener environment in the twin cities.
As Kalyan and Dombivli embark on this eco-friendly journey, the residents can look forward to a greener, more sustainable mode of transportation, aligning with the global shift towards environmental responsibility and sustainable living.
