In a historic ceremony broadcast nationally, the heir to the Spanish throne, Princess Leonor takes Oath of Allegiance to Spain’s Constitution on his 18th birthday. This significant event paves the way for her eventual ascension to the throne as queen. The ceremony, held in the lower house of parliament, symbolizes the continuity of Spain’s parliamentary monarchy and the institution’s commitment to the nation.

Leonor de Borbón Ortiz recited the same oath her father did when he turned 18 in 1986. Her pledge includes faithfully carrying out her duties, upholding the Constitution and laws, respecting citizens’ rights, and showing loyalty to the king.

Leonor’s journey to becoming a queen began when her father, Felipe VI, was proclaimed king in 2014. Recently, her popularity has surged, leading to the phenomenon known as “Leonormania,” where she is seen as the modern face of the monarchy.

In her post-oath speech at the Royal Palace, Leonor emphasized her commitment to serving all Spaniards with respect and loyalty, urging trust in her as she looks towards the nation’s future.

However, not all support the monarchy, as some political parties and regional lawmakers favor a republic over a monarchy. Still, the parliamentary chamber was filled with dignitaries and former prime ministers who applauded Leonor’s oath.

The Spanish royal family has faced its share of challenges, including scandals involving former King Juan Carlos, Leonor’s grandfather, who left Spain amid financial scandals in 2020. While there is a desire to rebuild the monarchy’s image, questions about its history and legitimacy remain.

Leonor has been groomed for her future role by her parents and is currently undergoing military training in Zaragoza. She is multilingual and has shown grace and intelligence in her public appearances, leaving Spaniards hopeful for her reign.

Princess Leonor’s popularity is undeniable, with “Leonormania” sweeping the nation. Her ability to stay out of controversy and maintain a positive public image has contributed to her widespread support, with only a small percentage doubting her readiness to assume her role as head of state.

As Spain welcomes its future queen, Princess Leonor, the nation watches with anticipation and hope for a bright and successful reign that will leave a lasting legacy in the history of the Spanish monarchy.
