The horrific event unfolded in Plainfield, Illinois, and is believed to be driven by anti-Muslim sentiment and the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. Authorities have condemned the attack, describing it as a “senseless and cowardly act of violence.”

According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when Hanaan Shahin made a frantic 911 call, reporting that she was being attacked by her landlord, Joseph Czuba. She managed to seek refuge in the bathroom while continuing to fend off her assailant. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they discovered both victims in a bedroom, each with multiple stab wounds to their chest, torso, and upper extremities.

Tragically, Wadea Al-Fayoume succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, leaving behind a grieving family and community. His mother, though critically injured, is expected to survive. Authorities have established that the attack was motivated by the victims’ Muslim identity and their connection to the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and Israel.

About 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Chicago, Mr. Czuba was sitting on the ground outside the property with a cut on his face when the police came. The choice of weapon, a 12-inch serrated military-style knife, underscores the brutality of the assault.
